About the school

Overview

S. Thomas’ Preparatory School is a private, Anglican, multi-ethnic educational institution for boys, that provides education at both the primary and secondary levels. This prestigious institution that was established on the 17th of May in 1938 by its founding father, William Thomas Keble, is governed by the Anglican Diocese of Colombo, and prides itself on being one of the first preparatory schools initiated within the British public school system here in Sri Lanka.

S. Thomas’ Preparatory School focuses on promoting the academic, cultural, moral and physical development of its students within a Christian framework, with God at the core of it’s workings as stated in the school motto, “The Lord is My Shepherd”. However, this does not affect the schools stellar reputation of being a multi-religious, multi-ethnic and multi-cultural institution that promotes religious and racial harmony as can be observed through the many activities organised by and for the students.

This “new school of a new style,” as mentioned in an article in the Ceylon Observer in 1938, which began with just 80 students and a staff of 7 teachers on roll, has now blossomed into one of the most reputable schools in Sri Lanka with 970 students and over 100 members of staff. The school which once only catered to primary students, now welcomes children within the ages of 6 and 16 (grades 1 to 11), emphasising on the requirements and aspirations of younger children and providing them with an opportunity to learn and develop, unfettered and unhampered by older and more mature students.

At S. Thomas’ Preparatory School, special attention is paid to make sure that academic success is achieved not only within the world of examinations, but also within life itself. This is accomplished by ensuring that all our students are well immersed in a plethora of co-curricular and extra curricular activities that would guarantee that our graduating class has had all the opportunities made available to them to make themselves all-rounders. Each of these opportunities provide our students with a platform to not only discover, but also enhance a variety of skills that they themselves uncover within, whilst being engaged in the respective activity.

We believe that each and every student who walks through our gates has the potential to do great things, and thus always push them towards greatness. As a result, we are focused on identifying our students’ strengths and weaknesses and providing them with the necessary tools to develop their individuality, however they seem fit, just as long as a high level of empathy is always in check. Therefore, it is fair to say that at S. Thomas’ Preparatory School, every student receives an equal opportunity to obtain a great education that focuses on creating loving human beings.

Our ultimate goal is to produce students who are not only educated and talented but also respectful, responsible and resilient citizens who value diversity and lifelong learning.

School Song

Cheer, Cheer, Prep School Boys,
For our home by the roaring billows,
That sound their song in our ears all day,
And lull us at night on our pillows.

Chorus:
Cheer, Cheer, Prep School Boys,
Sing we in cheerful chorus,
We’ll cherish the School of our youthful years
Through Life that lies before us

Cheer, Cheer, Prep School Boys,
For our Flag with its colours flying,
Dark blue, Light blue and Gleaming White,
Gaily the breeze defying

Cheer, Cheer Prep School Boys,
Though we’re small we’ve brains and muscle,
And have shown we can hold our own ere this
In many a friendly tussle

Cheer, Cheer, Prep School Boys,
For the games we play together,
Play with vim in the sunshine bright,
Nor less in a rainy weather

Cheer, Cheer Prep School Boys,
For our tasks (Tho’ we often shirk them),
History, Grammar, Science, Sums,
Which are wrong as a rule when we work them

Chorus:
Cheer, Cheer, Prep School boys
Sing we in cheerful chorus,
We’ll cherish the School of our youthful years
Through Life that lies before us
