PAST PREPITE EXCELS AT CRICKET
Past Prepite Yohan Mendis completes 1,000 runs in a season in the UK in 2022

Yohan Mendis played cricket for S. Thomas’ Preparatory School (STPS) from the age of 10 (Under 13 and U15), captaining the team in 2009 (U 13), and once again in 2012 (U 15).
He played his first season overseas for Pudsey Congs in Yorkshire and went on to complete 1,000 runs in the season. In this 130-year history of the club this milestone has been achieved only thrice, the last being V. V. S. Lakshman (in 1996), the former Indian National player.
Yohan scored 2 centuries and 12 half centuries with a top score of 121 not out. He was also awarded the Best Batsman’s prize in the Bradford Cricket League for 2022.

After completing his Ordinary Level Examination Yohan joined S. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia (STCML) and played 3 Royal Thomian Big matches (2014-2016) and was Vice Captain for the 1st XI Cricket team in his final year. In the 3 Big Matches played Yohan scored 2 half centuries. In 2016 Yohan and his opening partner, Rashmika Opatha established a new record for STCML when they scored 197 runs for the 1st wicket, thereby erasing a record held for 80 years. In 2016 the contribution of votes by the Prepites saw Yohan adjudged runner up in the Most Popular School Boy Cricketer contest.

After leaving school Yohan continued his cricket joining Tamil Union and scored a half century on debut against the Chiilaw Marians (2018). He was in an 88-run partnership for the 8th wicket with Rangana Herath. Meanwhile he scored his first 1st Class century (116) in 2020, and put on a 144-run partnership for the 4th wicket with Dhananjaya De Silva.

Meanwhile Yohan qualified as a Level 1 Coach in Sri Lanka and a Level 2 Coach in the United Kingdom (UK). During his free time, he helped with summer camps to coach juniors as a batting coach/assistant coach. At STCML Yohan coached the Under 13 and under 15 teams, he was also Master-in-Charge of the 1st XI Cricket Team during the year that toured England.
Yohan also excelled in basketball and soccer for STPS. He left for his 2nd season in the UK in April, 2023.

The S. Thomas' Preparatory School Old Boys' Union is proud of the noteworthy achievements by alumnus Yohan Mendis, and congratulate him on his remarkable cricketing prowess, and wish him continued success in his cricketing career.

S. THOMAS' PREPARATORY SCHOOL
85th FOUNDERS DAY

Today, the 17th of May 2023 the Prepite Community celebrates the completion of eighty five years since our Alma Mater was founded.

William Thomas Keble, our founder, having realized the need for a more conducive approach to educational pursuits of young gentlemen at that time, founded the Preparatory School of S. Thomas the Apostle on the morning of the 17th of May 1938 with a simple service of dedication led by the Bishop of Colombo.
The rest is history.

S. Thomas’ Preparatory School, over the past eighty five years and under the guidance of six Headmasters, has gone on to achieve excellence and even greatness in every sphere. We have produced some great and outstanding leaders in almost every field of professional and public life and have contributed to the development of the Church, our nation and the world in more ways than one. Our alumni over the past eighty five years have made the School proud by their many achievements and contributions.
As a School we have often tasted the thrill of victory but we have also endured the agony of defeat and the anguish of loss.
Be it success or failure Prepites have endured throughout, thanks to the Prepite Brotherhood that comes together, come what may.
We are not a large School when compared to some of the leading state, private and international schools. Some may profess that we may not be a School that is as yet fully geared with everything in terms of infrastructure, & facilities. But we are still a School that stands for a set of values and principles that are timeless and which we will hold on to in the years to come.
As we celebrate this significant milestone in our School’s life, we remember with much reverence & gratitude our founder, our former Headmasters, our retired teachers, our present teaching staff, administrative and support staff, & last but not least, Prepites, both young and not so young whose service & contribution to the School is greatly acknowledged and appreciated.

Here's wishing a pioneering institution rich in tradition, characterized by more than eighty years of hard work, dedication and achievement, all imbibed with the legendary Prepite Spirit, blessings to uphold the traditions, culture and excellence in producing gentlemen of the highest calibre, for many years to come.

We stand as one. Steadfast in our resolve with hearts & minds akin to that of a family, a brotherhood, guided by our school motto.
The Lord Is My Shepherd.
